This is vague writing, using two words when one word is better. Clear and more descriptive examples are increase, intensify, broaden, accelerate and extend. Use them, if you want to be clear and concise. There is no need to put the reader through unnecessary mental gymnastics to get the meaning. The job of the writer is to do that work for the reader.
